ASDA, Sainsbury’s and House of Fraser to accept mobile payments from 2015

Major high street retailers including ASDA, Sainsbury’s and House of Fraser are to accept mobile payments from 2015, it has been announced.

The brands set to introduce the new payment method, which will use technology from Zapp, also include Thomas Cook, Shop Direct, Clarks and Spar.

The number of companies involved represents the largest coalition of retailer support for a new payment method ever announced in the UK.

The system enables customers to pay for goods securely with their mobile devices and bank accounts using a mobile banking app.

Zapp chief executive Peter Keenan said the move marked “a hugely significant milestone in the history of money in the UK”, adding that the retailers’ support was “amazing”.

Paul Fielding, group treasurer at ASDA, which will be adopting the new system, said: “Zapp supports our long-standing commitment to innovation.

“Our customers want to have choice, not only of what they buy but how they buy it, and Zapp will represent a fantastic addition to our payment options.”

Zapp is also partnered with banks including HSBC, Nationwide and Santander.
