US retailers warned over POS cyber attacks

The FBI has warned US retailers that they could face more malware attacks targeting point of sale (POS) systems.

The warning comes in the aftermath of an attack on Target that saw a potential 40 million credit and debit card accounts affected.

The agency said that memory-parsing malware, which scrapes systems’ RAM for card data, could be used in more attacks against retailers.

“We believe POS malware crime will continue to grow over the near term, despite law enforcement and security firms’ actions to mitigate it,” said an FBI report obtained by Reuters.

It said that the accessibility and affordability of the malware and the potential profits made the type of crime ‘attractive to a wide range of actors’.
